In another round of layoffs, maverick billionaire Elon Musk-led Twitter has reportedly fired nearly 50 employees. 

According to a report by the United States (US)-based tech company The Information, this has been the eighth round of layoffs conducted by the tech giant. The decision impacted multiple engineering teams of the global microblogging platform. 

The Twitter layoff saga began in November 2022, when the company fired 3,700 staff as a cost-cutting measure. Prior to the recent one,  the tech giant handed pink slips to employees from its ad sales team. 

Since the acrimonious takeover by Musk, the microblogging site has fired more than 7,500 staff. The company has also been a subject of controversy since Musk acquired a majority stake for $44 billion. 

The company disbanded the Trust and Safety Council, an advisory group of nearly 100 independent civil and human rights organisations used to provide suggestions on content. It also suspended the account of its rival, Koo. Additionally, Musk attracted criticism for suspending the accounts of some journalists with whom he had tiffs. 

According to a Mint report, nearly 1,50,000 employees lost their jobs in the global tech space last year. Apart from Twitter, the tech giant Meta announced to lay 13 per cent of its workforce off. 

This year has also not offered any difference till now. It started with Jeff Bezos-led e-commerce major Amazon hitting the headlines after announcing to cut down 18,000 jobs. It was followed by Alphabet and Walmart, which laid off 12,000 and 10,000 staff respectively.
