Karan Shroff resigned from his position as chief marketing officer (CMO) at edtech Unacademy. He joined the start-up in 2019 as vice president of the marketing division and was elevated to a partner last year.
Shroff announced his departure in a LinkedIn post. “I will be hanging up my boots at Unacademy. Over three years of memories, tons of awards, a great team that taught me a lot, and a journey that I will always cherish. I would like to thank everyone that helped in this chapter of my life and I’m extremely grateful to everyone in the industry for their support in helping make Unacademy the brand it is today. On that note I will be moving on from Unacademy and onto the next,” his post said.
The reason behind Shroff’s departure has not been disclosed. Gaurav Munjal, Unacademy’s co-founder, and CEO said in a statement, “We thank Karan immensely for his contributions towards building Unacademy into one of the most Iconic brands of India. He will transition out of his role after six months at Unacademy. We wish him all the very best for his future endeavors.”
Shroff’s departure from the start-up comes at a highly turbulent time of mass layoffs and pay cuts in the Indian start-ups as the industry witnessed a funding winter over the past few months. Last month, the company laid off as many as 700 employees from its Relevel vertical amid a global slowdown in funding.
In June this year, the edtech laid off as many as 600 employees, or 2.6 per cent of its workforce, as a cost-cutting measure. The company has also resorted to other cost-cutting measures such as paycuts for founders and restricting complimentary meals and snacks in the office.
