In an attempt to bolster its transportation services in India, the global e-commerce giant Amazon launched Amazon Air on Monday. This will help the company to enhance faster deliveries of products.
As per multiple media sources, the company is planning to utilise the air services in Indian cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Delhi. It aims to use the full cargo capacity of a Boeing 737-800. For the success of this mission, the company has partnered with the Bengaluru-based Quickjet.
With this development, Amazon has become the first e-commerce platform to operate air services to deliver products. The company launched the service in the United States (US) six years ago.
Talking about the latest development, Akhil Saxena, the vice president (VP) of customer fulfillment (APAC, MENA & LATAM) of worldwide customer service at Amazon, said that this development would support 1.1 million sellers in the country.
"We continue to invest in speed. We have invested in delivery infrastructure to strengthen the delivery network. This will help ship goods faster from our fulfillment centres to last-mile deliveries," he added.
Amazon is eying to tap into the delivery business in India. Its logistical arm Amazon Transportation Services will deliver non-amazon products to consumers. Recently the company invested Rs 400 crore in this logistics unit through its Singapore and Mauritius units. Prior to this, it infused Rs 375 crore in 2022.
The global tech giant has been in the news after announcing its global layoff plans of 18,000 employees. The layoffs can impact 1,000 employees in India also.
